Care Tips
When to bathe your Peterbald:
Your Peterbald's coat will determine how often they will need to be bathed. Ultra bald will need to be
bathed every two weeks or so while Flock or Chamois coat will need to be bathed every three to four.
Velour, brush and strait coats need to be bathed less often; anywhere from six to eight weeks or so.
Every cat is different. You will get a better idea as to how often your Peterbald will need its bath. This
gives you a general idea as to the average time frame.
Supplies Needed:
When it's time to bathe your Peterbald, make sure you have your supplies at arms reach, opened and
ready for quick access. Here is a list of items needed:
* Feminine Wash (yes...I know what you're thinking...but it works best)
* Virbac Epi-Otic solution (ear cleaner)
* Baby Oil or Gel
* Q-Tips
* Washcloth
* Large Towel
* Winter (knit) Gloves
* Cotton Balls
* Cat Nail Trimmer
* Dish Detergent
Bath Time!!!
Before I wash my PDs, I make sure I have a heating pad in his favorite bed. When they are done being
bathed, this will be his favorite spot to warm up. Get your winter gloves on. This helps hold our cat. A
wet Peterbald can get VERY SLIPPERY. The gloves also help hold lather. First lather up his claws
with the dish detergent to help soften up the dirt. Use your fingers and gently massage the claws to get
them totally lathered up and clean. Rinse your gloves clean. Then move on to lather up the rest of him
with the feminine wash. Do not rinse the cat at all until he is totally lathered up...this includes the claws.
When the claws are completely clean and his whole body is lathered up, rinse him completely with
warm (not hot) water. Keep the washcloth handy in case he gets anything in his eyes. Dry him very
well...dont forget the folds of his skin and belly. Every inch of him needs to be totally dry. Take your
Virbac Epi-Otic and place a few drops in each ear and gently massage the base of his ears to work in
the solution. Take your Q-Tip...CAREFULLY...and cleanup the black gunk. Next, I use a little bit or
baby oil gel (lavender scented) and put some on a cotton ball. Wipe his bum clean. Lastly, trim the
claws. Use caution when trimming cat claws. If you don't know how to do this, ask your vet to
demonstrate for you when you bring kitty in for their initial check up. They will be more than happy to
show you how this is done. I trim my PDs nails every three weeks. Making sure you keep up with his
bath and nail clipping will make for a very happy healthy Peterbald.
Daily and Weekly Maintenance:
Every other day, I wash my PD's eyes. Because they are hairless, some PDs need their eyes cleaned
more often than not. You can tell if your Peterbald needs their eyes cleaned by inspecting their eyes. If
you see a jelly like substance in the corner of his eyes, he needs his eyes cleaned. I justtake a warm
washcloth and gently wipe his eyes. Keep on hand an eye antibiotic. You can get a prescription from
the vet. This keeps his eyes clean and free from bacteria. I use an antibiotic after wiping my PDs eyes.
Also, every other day, I clean my PDs bum. Just take a cotton ball like you used for their bath.
Tips:
Always try to avoid changing their dry kibble. Cats have a very sensitive stomach and tend to do better
when their diet is consistent. Another thing to avoid is changing their brand of litter. Doing so can result
in accidents. If they don't like their litter, they will not use their box. I recommend an automatic litter
box to keep their box clean, such as Scoopfree. Click here for a demonstration.
Most importantly...show your baby lots of love and affection. Showing admiration to your Peterbald is
the most important tip I can give you. They love you unconditionally and they deserve the same back.
